History of Basketball
I.
Who invented basketball?
James Naismith
II.
Where?
At the YMCA Training
School in Springfield, Massachusetts
III.
When?
In 1891
IV.
How?
Naismith was given 14
days to create an indoor game that would provide an “athletic distraction”. It
had to not take up much room, could help its track athletes to keep in
shape. Make it fair for all players and
not to rough.
V.
Why?
To condition young
student athletes during the winter.
VI.
What were the circumstances at the beginning?
The peach baskets
didn’t have a whole at the bottom so the game had to be temporarily paused and
someone got a ladder and retrieved the ball.
VII.
What was it like at the start?
You couldn’t dribble
the ball.
VIII.
How is basketball different today than when it
first started?
It
was a soccer ball first rather than a soccer ball. It was nine versus nine.
Instead
of two hoops it was peach baskets. Original rules didn’t have dribble.
IX.
Insert a few pictures showing the development of
the game basketball: basket, goal, gym, uniform, court, etc.
X.
